College.

Societies way of sucking up the nonexistent cash that all students wish they had. It’s societies way of fucking you over for a good portion of your life so that you’re in debt for a few years of your life then by the time you are done paying off your debts you start from ground zero all over again.

Then you keep working so you can save up some money and maybe go on a vacation to some place you’ve always wanted to see or maybe just a world trip. Maybe you will save up for that dream car or something more down to earth like making a child with cancers one wish come true. Maybe you don’t really give a shit at that point in life and just spend your money and live day to day.

All I want to know is, how did college really help you? Did you use anything you learned in a college classroom in the real world? Did you HONESTLY, actually apply any knowledge from your degree to your actual work? Maybe you did and if so, then good for you. But for the most of us, we go to college, we get a degree, and end up in a completely irrelevant field of work where we don’t even use our degree. So what are we really doing in college? We are spending money to get a fucking piece of paper that says we can do something. Oh, did I forget to mention that we taught OURSELVES for the most part?

I mean seriously, I don’t learn anything in my CSE12 class. I haven’t gone to any of the lectures, haven’t read the book, and haven’t even read the profs power points. CSE 15L, I haven’t read the book, I haven’t learned anything from his lectures, and the labs are the biggest 3 hour waste of your time. SIO 40 is fairly interesting because it’s relevant with what’s going on with our planet today but still a ridiculously easy class which requires no reading and maybe like 30 minutes of actual studying for the midterm. Then there is Anthro 101. This class is the one I like best this quarter because it’s theoretical and there are no right answers. Heck there aren’t really any REAL answers at all. You just state your position and back it up with readings and other people’s research and you’ve got your standpoint. Very interesting class and I do enjoy it. This is the one class I have where I actually am learning from my professor and I am glad that he is my professor because he is very knowledgeable in his subject and explains it thoroughly.

So overall I learn absolutely nothing and am wasting my time in two of my classes. Somewhat learn some basic stuff about the Earth in SIO 40 and actually learn in Anthro 101. I have just about aced every test that I have taken in these courses for which I went and learned the info myself. For what reason am I paying these professors if they are not teaching me anything and I have to learn it on my own? Why can’t I just not waste my time in college and teach myself whatever I want to learn and then go get a job? I’m paying about 4.8k to learn about something I’m not even majoring in? I also find out that I am no longer required to take CSE 15L and cannot drop the class and have it waived. And with the current economy, I don’t think half of the graduates will even be able to get a job upon graduation.

All in all, I am dropping Computer Engineering as my major and swapping to Economics with an emphasis in Management Science. Hopefully I’ll graduate in a year from now so I can go to a different university and get a Finance degree.

My dreams may never come true. I may feel like a total failure for the rest of my life. I might have just thrown my future out the window. But I will NEVER quit trying. I WILL be successful, one way or another.

Reality speaks to the mind. Dreams whisper to the heart.
